FST Computer-Fit Shafts

FST Computer - Fit Shafts
Welcome To The Future!

By Britt Lindsey

After years of research combining the efforts of Golf Science Consultants, Inc. and FEMCO Steel Technologies a new approach to trajectory fitting has been developed. Howard Butler and Mike Twigg of GSC, Inc. two long-time industry veterans and the foremost authorities on golf ball trajectory and analysis and shaft performance discovered a relationship between shaft curvature and ball trajectory that provides new insight into shaft fitting. They have synthesized this information and complied it in the form of a trajectory analysis code for the Pro Vision product line.

This new development offers the end user or custom clubmaker definitive ball trajectory information related to shaft design and various trimming scenarios. For the first time, this information is being
offered to the customer related to the ProVision shaft. This
remarkable technology allows the end user to plot his expected relative trajectories for a single club or a full set based upon his
trimming requirements. The illustrations to the right portray trajectory plots of a single shaft
(Fig. 1), a single shaft with multiple trim scenarios (Fig. 2), trajectory plots for a full set of irons (Fig. 3), and trajectory plots for different
trim scenarios within the set (Fig. 4). Access to the software is being provided by FT upon purchase of the ProVision shaft via a CD and/or on-line access via the internet. All results can be printed out for the end user.

The simplicity of the ProVision hardly reflects the complexity of its development, however, that is the beauty of it. The club builder is provided with only two SKUs for a full range of flexes and a selection
of desiredlaunch angles. Easy to use software for trimming is provided free of charge to the club builder. The ProVision is a complex shaft this is realized in an attractive simple package.

A summary of ProVision features:

  • Two 43-inch shafts were designed - an A/R flex and an S/X flex. Two SKUs flt 12 different shafts
  • The club builder determines the appropriate flex and trims two inches from the tip for the firmer flex, or two inches from the butt for the softer flex
  • The club builder determines the desired trajectory - low, mid, or high
  • For a lower trajectory - tip trim to length
  • For a higher trajectory - butt trim to length
  • For a mid trajectory - trim equal amounts off the tip and the butt to assemble the longest club, and then trim 1/4" from the butt and 1/4"from the tip for each incremental club in set
  • Software is provided to evaluate the effect that different trim scenarios have on ball trajectory. Now for the first time the purchaser can match his own product to his own requirements
