Maltby DBM Forged Iron Heads

Maltby DBM Forged Iron Views

The Maltby DMB irons are the next generation of our proven classic 5 step true forged iron design. The lofts have been increased by 1 degree to a achieve a more modern loft progression along with improved finish durability and CNC groove dimensions. The DBM (Diamonized Black Metal) finish is a chemically implanted finish that is 2x more wear resistant, 3x more corrosion (rusting) resistant and 3x more scratch resistant than nickel chrome finishes. In addition to the added surface protection, the DMB finish is chemically implanted so there is no finish layer thickness added to the exterior finish as with nickel chrome finishes. Because the grooves are machined into forged iron heads prior to finishing, the DBM finish actually increases the productivity of the grooves vs. chrome finishes by eliminating this outer finish layer. The DBM irons also feature precision milled micro grooves to improve the consistency of spin from all turf conditions.

  • "DBM" Diamonized Black Metal finish is a chemically implanted finish that is more wear resistant, corrosion resistant and scratch resistant than any carbon steel finish currently available.
  • DBM finish increases surface hardness without affecting the feel and actually enhances the adjustability aspects of the 1035 carbon steel.
  • Five-step true forging process provides unparalleled quality and playability.
  • 1035 Carbon Steel provides a soft, solid feel and allows for easy adjustability.
  • Traditional blade profile appeals to better players and traditionalist while maintaining a high playability.
  • Cavity back design concentrates weight around the perimeter and low, yielding a very forgiving “players” club.
  • Blended leading and trailing edges of the sole will not snag.
  • Available #3 - PW, GW
  • Conforms to the rules of golf
  • RH only
  • Recommended ferrule – 74PI
  • Product Code = MA0225

Rated 5 out of 5 by from DBM Forged I bought this in a 7 Iron because I was looking to experiment with forged irons. I love the way they look and feel! I first tried it with a prolaunch senior flex 65g, a reshafted Ping shaft(103g), a 95g graphite but the one that worked the best for me was the Graftech 65g Reg Flex because of the mid point shaft flex and stiffer tip. The Graftech 65 doesn't hurt my wrists since I have arthritis and doesn't balloon the ball. I installed a Win-Dritac grip and trimmed the final shaft length same as my Ping Eye 2- for a final swing weight of C6. My Ping Eyes 2's were stock at C-8. I also play Mizuno 800 HD with my DBM Forged in my bag both awesome.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Nice! I bought these heads a couple of weeks ago and installed my favorite shafts(Project X Flighted 5.5). After a few rounds I believe I have found my gamer clubs in the DBM's. Great clubs, smooth when hit in the sweet spot and just the amount of spin I like on approach shots. I have found them easy to hit and the feed back is very telling on good strikes and bad. Any strike of the face will give good distance. The heads look much nicer in person than the photos. I would strongly recommend these to others looking for a forged cavity back iron.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic feel I have been playing the Srixon Z745 all season as my first pairing of the DBM with the AXE 110 left me with mediocre results. After some shaft tinkering and settling on the DBM heads and the AXE Tour X 95 S shafts I have kicked the Srixon's to the curb. First off the feel on contact is buttery soft almost as if you missed the ball entirely. The ball has a highish, soaring type of flight. They get up quickly and a very forgiving. Distance control is excellent and I lost no yardage from the 745s. Should have tinkered with the shafts much sooner. Absolutely love these heads.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Maltby Fan I have played maltby irons for over 10 years. The MO5's and the TE's most recently. While these are very much alike compared to the TE's, there is a major difference in feel. The DBM's feel much harder. Whether this is because of the finish or some other variable, I'm not quite sure. Whowever the durability and looks of the diamondized finish are outstanding. After playing them for probably 20 rounds I am trying to dial in my distance control with these irons. Overall another quality iron with outstanding eye appeal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Forged DBM Irons Bought these about 4 months ago, the looks and performance has been outstanding; so much so I sold my I20's previously bagged and dropped my handicap from 7 to 4 will these heads (matched with KBS tour shafts). They feel and perform like you would expect any fine forging to perform; plus that slightest cavity back is a benefit. The DBM is an outstanding process, it is embedded, not a dipped or coated process so it wears beautifully - and the micro grooves work. A possible improvement would be to move a small amount of material increasing perimeter weighting a fraction.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Heads I have been playing the MTF the last couple seasons and really loved the way they played and especially loved the way they felt. After seeing pics of the new DBM, I decided to try the 6 iron as a demo before getting the complete set. The heads are much better looking in person than the pics. I played the 6 iron for a couple rounds and have liked it enough that I now have the 5-pw set. I've been very impressed with the micro grooves so far as they do seem to spin the ball as much as the MTF (pre rule change grooves). The DBM finish seems very durable so far as well, but it's really too early to tell for sure. I do think that the DBM sound/feel a touch clickier than the MTF - it might be the harder finish that has changed the sound a touch to make them feel a bit firmer. Regardless, they still feel great and still have the overall soft sound and feel of forged heads. So far I'm happy and impressed. Guys at my course like the looks of them as well as I've gotten a cou

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Found a winner!!! Got a 4-pw set through a club building friend. Was looking for something out of the norm as far as "Big Bland" brands go. Currently play a set of miura black blades with aerotech ami99 players spec shafts and love the combination of feel and control. I put the same model shafts into these maltby irons and I must say based of my first few hours of hitting at local indoor facility I am blown away at how these irons feel and the distance if gained throughout the set. Obviously a bit stronger in loft but not overly so. What has me so pumped about these heads is the very clean look at address and the full, pure feel at contact. I thought nothing would out "feel" my miura blades but these DBM irons feel softer yet very very solid while struck. I've been razzed by my playing partners about playing these but they have no idea what they are missing. Until I bet one friend to hit it and tell me it's not equal or way better than his "tailored" club brand. Not to bash the almighty gods of b

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great forged irons with forgiveness!! This is the first review I have ever written on irons. I am a 12 handicap that probably should play game improvement irons but I much prefer the look and feel of forged irons. I have played AP2's and Mizuno MPH5's recently, and tried these on a whim. Ball flight with Apollo Gunsmoke shafts are slightly higher than both of those models, and about a half club longer. What blows me away about these is the forgiveness and feel. Never have I had a set of irons that are as forgiving but are forged. Can't say enough good things about them!!

Can you recommend a more value-priced graphite iron shaft for these irons besides Recoils, Steelfiber, or XCalibur Tour X?

Asked by: games
The standard Xcaliber iron shaft (AS0023) matches well. The Graphite Design G-Tech (GD0012), Aldila Value Series (VXBI) and new Aldalite (AL0056) are also shafts that could work well.

Is it possible for you to compare the blade length on these to the Bridgestone J15 CB's?  Those are pushing too long heel to toe for me,and, even though I am EXTREMELY interested in these I would not want to get anything longer heel to toe then that.

Asked by: tommyr1972
I do not have the blade measurement of the Bridgestone J15 CB irons but an educated guess from looking at the picture and being used to see other Bridgestone irons our MMB will have a longer blade length. The MMB would also have a shallower look then the J15 CB which can make it look longer as well.

Is the DBM finish similar to DLC?

Asked by: Pete
I am not sure what the “DLC” stands for when they describe the finish. The description, as I read it, states “the Xtreme Dark finish is a three layer process that is deposited on the surface using a closed-filed unbalanced-magnetron sputter-ion plating system”. Does not sound like our Diamonized Black Metal finish. I would love to test it. I do know that the DBM is extremely durable. Our manufacturer of the DBM is the only one that does it (they do the Cobra as well), and he does not manufacturer the PXG, so it can not be the same process. Cobra is using the DBM on a model this year. If I find out more, I will let you know.
