The Maltby Triangle Gauges are used to calculate the "Effective" bounce angle on wedges, not the actual bounce. At this link if you scroll down towards the bottom of the page in the Product Description box you will see a drawing of the 56 degree gauge with a wedge set in it properly. What we are measuring is the green triangle area that you see. We measure this area by measuring the leading edge height and the trailing edge where the sole of the wedge rests on the gauge. We calculate the effective bounce in square inches by taking the Sole Tangent Point x Leading Edge Height x .5 = Effective Bounce in Square Inches. Leading Edge Height is measured at the center point of the radius on the leading edge. There are Four Design Factors that determine Effective Bounce. 1. The Sole Bounce Angle 2. The Width of the Sole 3. The Sole Radius 4. The Leading Edge Grind. We define a "Normal" Effective Sole Bounce as being from .101 to 161 Square Inches. "Increased" Effective Sole Bounce between .162 to .242 Square Inches. "Greater" Effective Sole Bounce between .243 to .312 Square Inches and "Maximum" Effective Sole Bounce from .313 & Above Square Inches. The smaller the Effective Bounce area requires greater skill levels to be consistent. The larger the effective bounce the easier to use for the less skilled players.
