Blade style with GI performance
Reviewed By:
J Evans (Glenolden, PA)
I gave up the game in 1995 and just got back into playing in 2009. I started playing again using a set of Ping G-10 irons with the graphite shaft.
They are considered "Super Game Improvment" clubs and are very forgiving. I was able to get my HC down to a 7 and figured that I should get a more "serious" type of club.
I looked at all the OEM brands and even demoed some. My biggest concern was dropping $1K on a new set and not liking them.
It is hard for me to know if I like a club while just using it in a hitting booth for ten minutes.
So I looked into a set of Maltby component clubs from the Golf Works. I was interested in a set of "blades" but wanted the forgiveness of a GI style club.
I could have bought the components separately and "customized" the set, but I wanted to keep costs down and went with a complete (almost ready to go) set.
I purchased the Tricept F-2 Forged Irons (3-PW) with the stock FST steel shafts in an A/R flex. These are considered "conventional" and have a rating of 551 compared to my Ping's 805.
The price was fantastic and although I couldn't demo them, I figured that, if I didn't like them, the investment was not too great and I could get most
of my money back if I sell them. The customer service at Golf Works was excellent and although they didn't have the components in stock, I had them at my front door in exactly two weeks.
The build quality was excellent and the first thing I noticed was the weight. I expected a heavier weight and when I weighed them against my Ping's (graphite) I was surprised to see they weighed EXACTLY the same. Probably due to the the chunky head of the Pings compared to the blade of the Maltbys.
I tried them on the range before I played a round and noticed that the feel was completely different than my Ping's (obviously). Although they weigh the same as the Pings they felt lighter. This was due to the clubhead being lighter even though the shaft was heavier. It has that nice
