One way to potentially add distance to irons is to go to a lighter weight shaft. SteelFiber has weight options from the mid 70's to 110 grams. As a 1 handicap you obviously have a sense for how you want the clubs to feel, so the biggest hurdle in finding a lighter weight option is to find one that will still have a feel that you prefer. Unfortunately, the only real way to determine if a shaft change is going to produce the desired results is to try it. Concentrate on weight reduction if distance is the primary concern. Rarely will there be enough difference in the dynamic bend profile between shafts that will result in any measurable distance gains. Combine a lighter weight shaft with a reduction of loft, and the chances of gaining a few yards will be greater.
