Correct there is no grip tray for the digital swingweight scale. At the back of the scale there are two prongs that the shaft fits under and you would set the grip on top of the prongs with the edge of the grip cap right against the back edge of the scale. If necessary use a piece of 3/4" masking tape over the tip to hold it in place against the top of the shaft. You could also use a piece of tape to hold the ferrule in place. Personally over the years I figured out that the ferrule and epoxy, the way that I do club assembly, will add a half a swingweight. Another way to do a dry assembly is to use a split grip and slide if over the butt end of the shaft and put the club on the swingweight scale as you normally would. If you have a grip type that you use all the time having a split one works very well for dry assembly. With almost all grips if you divide the weight of the grip by 5.2 it will tell you how much the grip will lighten the swingweight.
