How does bore-thru iron heads change 8950GH flex? Bill

In stalling these shafts into a bore through design where the shaft comes through the sole will make the shafts play at least a half a flex stiffer then their listed flex. Depending on your set makeup you would soft step 2 clubs (install the 3 iron shaft into a 5 iron) to maintain the listed shaft flex.

can a 38 inch 5 iron shaft be trimmed to fit a 7 iron? would it greatly affect the shaft?

Yes you can install a 5 iron shaft into a 7 iron. We call this soft stepping and it will generally make a steel shaft play a half a flex more flexible then the flex listed on the shaft.

Your review of the 950 stated several times this shaft plays more flexible than the 950, they both are rated the same in R flex by you at 3B2H. with a driver speed of 88-91 what one do you recommend? Should I soft step the 950?

Assume you mean the 8950 as the shaft that plays a little softer than the 950. The 8950 is a high trajectory shaft vs the 950 which is a mid/high. The MPF ratings are based the flex profile over the entire shaft, the torsional stiffness and weight. The 950 has a slightly stiffer profile, and thus is categorized as a mid high vs a high trajectory. If you soft stepped the 950, it should play more like the 8950. Based on your driver speed, and if you have a slow to moderate tempo, the R flex should be the correct flex.

Would this shaft be a good replacement for a Taylormade R7 9 iron in stiff flex? Any different options similar or close to OEM?

The stock steel shaft in the R7 irons was listed as a T Step Ultralite and weighted 90 grams. I would suggest either the FST 90 (FS0011) or the True Temper XP 95 (TT0113). Both of these have similar weights and playing characteristics. These days Taylor Made does get most of their stock steel shafts from FST.

Is there a reason these shafts are one half inch longer than the 950GH and 1150GH shafts?

My guess is like graphite they are so lite that the extra lent won't weight anymore than with standard steel.The advantage is getting a bit more speed with the same swing.
