Rated 5 out of 5 by from consistant performer I have used the 65 'competition' series for several years repairing clubs for my fellow golfers and have always had very good results and compliments on their performance. Recently, a friend asked to have his steel shafted Callaway irons replaced with the Competition 65 shaft to swing between regular and senior. I accomplished this by down-stepping the 'regular', and it fits his desires perfectly.

Is it possible to make the tip .355 taper ? I am looking for a good graphite shaft to replace steel shafts in Titleist AP1 714 irons (4-9,P,W, - 8 shafts). If not, could you recommend reg. flex graphite w/ .355 taper tip to use in this application ?

Asked by: JoePuck
We could special order the Competition Series Graphite shafts from UST with a .355" taper tip to fit the AP1 irons. You would need to contact our Customer Service at or by calling 1-800-848-8358 and they can help you with the special order. Another shaft I would recommend that will fit the AP1 irons is the Xcaliber (AS0028) which is available in a .355" taper tip. It is a very good inexpensive shaft.

What does the "R/S" stand for? Is the shaft ready to be installed gripped and brought to the course? Or are there any other parts I need?

Asked by: Chris
R/S means it is a combination flex shaft that can be made to either an R flex or an S flex by following the shaft trimming instructions. We do offer a Shaft Prep service where we will cut the shaft for the flex that you want. We can also install the grips if you would like. It might be worth a call to our Customer Service Department and let them help you with your questions and your order. 1-800-848-8358

Do you cut the butt or tip cut the UST iron shafts?

Asked by: Chip
With the US0045 iron shafts you will cut both the tip and butt. You will cut the tip to create the flex for each club number and cut the butt end for the finished length you want the clubs to be.

Need to replace nickent 3DX RC graphite SR 2.5 R flex 75 gram shaft. What low cost shaft do you recommend?

Asked by: Chet
For good inexpensive shafts the UST Competition Series 65, Grafalloy ProCustom (TT202214) and the new Aldalite (AL0061) could all be good choices.

Trim code for the US0045 R/S combination flex shaft is IR11 for the Stiff flex. IR11 trim code is: 2" tip trim for 3 iron, 2.5" for a 4 iron, 3" for a 5 iron, 3.5" for a 6 iron, 4" for the 7 iron, 4.5" for the 8 iron, and 5" for the 9, PW, 5" maximum tip trim. Does the 73gm. rating apply to the stock shaft @42" prior to  the recommended IR3 > 7i. trim ? Additionally does a formula exist to predetermine net weight after tip & butt trim.

Asked by: Jim L
73 grams is the weight of the shaft before it is cut. What I do to calculate a cut weight is to divide the weight of the raw shaft by the raw length. In this case 73 divided by 42 equals 1.738. If I trim 2" off the shaft it I would multiply 1.738 by 40" and it equals 69.52 grams. This will generally be very close.
